The orange, one of the oldest cultivated fruits known to man, boasts a tough outer skin that holds the inner segments together. Often nine in number, the segments are collectively soft yet distinct. The nine Brysch siblings, like the outside of the orange, claim to be tough, bossy and competitive. What I found inside was a group of the kindest, most faithful, loving family.
The nine Brysch children grew up in the country outside Beeville, Texas. Strong in faith and family, the siblings, beginning in the late 80’s, began a tradition of meeting annually for a reunion. Eventually the group got too big and had to be narrowed down to only siblings. Orlean, Mary, Barbara, Jean, Ray and Bonnie all still live in Texas. Regina (Dee Dee) came in from Missouri, Ruth from Georgia, and Beth won the mileage race flying in all the way from Oregon. Jean was unable to make the trip this year, and it was apparent how greatly she was missed. The group spends the weekend playing games, catching up, and eating. :)
We met on a Saturday morning. Each year the siblings take a picture with interlocking hands. Like the orange, tough together yet beautifully individual.
We then headed out to the beach. After taking a few group pictures, the eight wrestled, which I think was just another excuse to hug, splashed water, and there was even a herkie or two! Yes, Bonnie and Dee Dee still got it!!
It was an absolute joy to hang out with this fun family. I’m hoping to slip in as a tenth sibling next year! Until then, I'll be working on my herkie. Please enjoy a few of my favorites.
